Kikinda National Museum
The National Museum of Kikinda is located in one of the oldest buildings in the city, the former Magistrate from 1839, which is a cultural treasure in its own right. Established in 1946, this museum is the guardian of the rich heritage of northern Banat and offers visitors a unique experience through diverse exhibitions, since its collections include items from the fields of ethnology, archaeology, history, art, and natural sciences. The museum’s most famous exhibit is Kika, one of the best-preserved mammoth skeletons in Europe. This mammoth, estimated to be around 500,000 years old, was discovered near Kikinda in 1996. Alongside Kika, the museum has a rich collection of artifacts ranging from the Neolithic period to the Second World War.
In addition to its permanent exhibition, visitors can enjoy a movie about mammoth Kika, an interactive presentation about the city, as well as thematic exhibitions in the gallery space. For the youngest visitors, the museum offers a specially designed space called “The Club”, where they can learn through play and exploration. Throughout the year, the National Museum of Kikinda organizes a variety of programs tailored to different visitor groups, aiming to bring archaeology, paleontology, and local history closer to various audiences through interactive activities and games. Moreover, the museum manages Suvača, an old horse-powered mill, which is now a cultural monument of exceptional significance. Suvača is open to visitors from April to October.
