National Museum of Čačak
Founded in 1952, the National Museum in Čačak established its permanent exhibition in the Jovan Obrenović’s residence the following year. Since 1980, temporary exhibitions have been organized in the gallery of the National Museum located in the ground floor of the old District Office in Čačak. The initiative to open the museum was launched between the two World Wars, when the Jovan Obrenović’s residence was handed over to the museum’s administration in 1940. The wartime slowed down the process, and the museum was finally established 12 years later, with the main goal of studying history and preserving cultural goods from this part of Serbia. The museum’s work was particularly successful and dynamic at the beginning, which enabled the museum collection to be ready for the opening of two exhibitions, one after the other. The museum’s professional staff, along with external associates, conducted 110 archaeological research projects, printed over 200 publications, 100 catalogs, and more than 50 monographs, collections, and guides. Since 1969, the National Museum has been publishing a journal titled “Collection of Papers from the National Museum.” The institution is conceived as a regional museum, which has five departments: paleontology, archaeology, history, history of art, and ethnology.
