At the initiative of the members of the Serbian Archaeological Society, which is the organizer of the YEAR OF ARCHAEOLOGY 2025 event, more than 30 scientific and cultural institutions and organizations engaged in archaeology, heritage protection, and the promotion of archaeological heritage in Serbia have supported the idea and intention to dedicate the year 2025 to presenting the work and achievements of the profession to the wider public.
about archaeology
There are several reasons for this: First and foremost, we recognize the problem in the position and understanding of archaeology as a science and profession in society at large, due to its insufficient representation and the way archaeology is communicated in the media and public space. The credibility of the archaeological profession and, more importantly, the protection of archaeological heritage are constantly threatened by the destruction of archaeological sites, the illegal trade of archaeological artifacts, and the growing production and popularity of pseudo-scientific interpretations of archaeological remains.
year of archaeology
In an effort to enhance public understanding of archaeology and raise social awareness about the importance of protecting archaeological heritage—and, by extension, archaeology as a profession—YEAR OF ARCHAEOLOGY 2025 aims to connect a large number of research organizations, cultural institutions, and the non-governmental sector. Through this network, it seeks to coordinate and generate various scientific, educational, and promotional activities to make archaeology more accessible to a wider audience.
Janko Šafarik
160 years of archaeology
Additionally, the fact that this year marks 160 years since the first archaeological excavations in Serbia, conducted by Janko Šafarik at Rudnik in 1865, as well as the recent centennial celebration of the Serbian Archaeological Society (founded in 1883), further inspires and reinforces our commitment to promoting archaeology, archaeological heritage, research findings, archaeologists, and archaeology enthusiasts through the YEAR OF ARCHAEOLOGY 2025 event.
